We have invited critic and author Susanne Christensen to give an introduction to Leonora Carrington in the foyer. She has written the book Leonora’s Journey, in which she undertakes a journey in Leonora Carrington’s footsteps, to New York, Mexico and California, in search of Carrington’s life and work.
Leonora Carrington was one of the great female artists of the last century. She left her mark both as a painter, sculptor and graphic artist, playwright, costume designer and writer. After growing up in England in the 30s, she almost escaped to Paris, where she became part of the surrealist movement and the environment around André Breton and Max Ernst. Via Spain, Portugal and the USA, she traveled on to Mexico.
While the male practitioners of surrealism are well-known names, unfortunately few know about the female surrealists, despite the fact that they participated in the most ground-breaking exhibitions of their time, side by side with their male colleagues.
In recent years, Leonora Carrington’s pictures have been seen at major exhibitions around the world, including at the Pompidou Center in Paris and the Picasso Museum in Malaga. But there are still many who do not know her art or her life story. We have therefore invited critic and author Susanne Christensen to give an introduction to the performance in the foyer. She has written the book Leonora’s Journey, in which she undertakes a journey in Leonora Carrington’s footsteps, to New York, Mexico and California, in search of Carrington’s life and work.
